About Us

What is U3A?

U3A stands for University of the Third Age. This is an international self help organisation for people no longer in full time employment and there are hundreds of U3A groups across the country. Each U3A is run independently, but follows the guiding principles set by the The Third Age Trust (a Registered Charity) which is the national support and advisory body for all UK U3As.

Why is it called University of the Third Age?

The word “university” is used in its original sense of people coming together to share and pursue learning in all its forms. No academic qualifications are required and membership is open to anyone who is retired or semi-retired.

Our members are in the so-called Third Age, which comes after the First Age of childhood dependence and the Second Age of full-time employment and parental responsibility.

About Causeway U3A

Causeway U3A is a member of the Third Age Trust. We have approximately 800 members, which makes us the largest U3A in Northern Ireland. Activities are centred in the towns of Portstewart and Coleraine on the beautiful north coast of Ireland, near The Giant's Causeway from which we take our name.

Causeway U3A holds monthly meetings in Portstewart Golf Club and runs a wide range of activities in a variety of venues in the Coleraine area. You can read more about these on the other pages.

Membership is open to all. There is no age restriction and we particularly welcome applications from younger retired or semi-retired people. No qualifications are required.

You can read more about the Causeway U3A organisation on the AGM, Committee, and History pages.

Are there other U3As in Northern Ireland?

There are a number of U3A groups in Northern Ireland and we work together with them through the regional committee. You can find links to all these groups on the Northern Ireland U3A regional website http://u3ani.info
