When not playing a real opponent in the class, most of our group practice using a powerful free computer Backgammon game which can be downloaded from www.gnubg.org.
Backgammon is an ancient game. The basic rules are very simple which means that a complete beginner can be playing within minutes. However, the more experienced player will become fascinated by strategy and tactics. The throw of the dice brings in an element of luck so that even a beginner might defeat an expert but it really is a game of skill. The stronger player will appear to be luckier in the dice throws but it is actually because he or she is maximising their chances of a good result.
The group meets on Monday afternoons for a relaxed and friendly round of games with a break for tea/coffee half way through. New players will be very welcome, whatever their knowledge of the game. Instruction will be available for both complete beginners and improvers.
